A WAY OF LIFE
TY’N - Y - MYNYDD FARM
Late July
A select group of male lambs, that may potentially make breeding rams, are blood tested for scrapie resistance. All pass.
A brief spell of fine weather allows us to make 5 acres of hay, and we also buy in some from a neighbour who’s haymaking at the same time.
A swarm of bees settles in the raspberry canes - luckily we have a spare hive, so pop them in.
All the second early spuds are lifted and stored.
Early August
Once again we gather the sheep off the mountain, for weaning this time. Also, a technician comes to backfat scan and weigh all the lambs for performance recording. Some of the male lambs are sold to Welsh Country Foods straight away, and the rest are moved to better pasture to fatten up a bit. We won’t sell any ewe lambs ‘til we’ve decided which ones to keep for breeding.
One of our OSB sows gives birth to 16 piglets.
Mid August
Despite the almost constant wet weather we take some sheep to a local show and do rather well (though, to be fair, there weren’t many others there!). Also, Dot exhibited some baking, Iestyn showed his ducks and Rhian won 3rd prize with her guinea pig!
There is currently a strong trade for weaned calves, so we’ve sold on some that we’d intended to keep through the coming winter.
