 A WAY OF LIFE
TY’N - Y - MYNYDD FARM
Mid July
Sadly, Tim’s best sheepdog, Tansy, has just died. She was 12 years old. She had been a thoroughly dependable workmate, and was also successful on the trials field. We will miss her. Tim now has a lot of work to do in order to bring her young grandson, Moss, up to the same standard.
Dot has taken on the role of secretary to the Ryeland Flock Book Society. It’s 315 members are very enthusiastic, and the society is flourishing.
Early July
We have a routine farm inspection by Trading Standards. As well as checking that all our paperwork is in order, they look at our medicine cupboard, chemical shed, feed store etc. Thankfully they find nothing amiss!
The day old chicks we bought 10 weeks ago are now chunky table birds, so we start killing them.
We gather the yearling ewes for dosing and marking, and are very pleased with how they look.
NEXT.
Late June
With shearing over, we weigh all the lambs, dose them, and apply a pour-on (against fly strike) before taking the flock back to the mountain. With all the sheep handling done for the time being, we can get on with cleaning out the sheds, and spreading some muck.
The level in the freezer is looking a bit low, so we kill a 4 year old wether, and some ducks. Ideally, though, we’d do this in the winter.
