 A WAY OF LIFE
TY’N - Y - MYNYDD FARM
Early September
We make a start clipping the shearling rams ready for the sale at Builth Wells later in the month. This is very time consuming but well worth it, as, done well, it can make quite a difference to the appearance of the tup and hopefully, the price.
Wet weather during August has meant the onions are still not harvested. The tomatoes are now ripening more quickly than we can eat them!
We select a small group of ten ewes for sponging, to run with our highest index ram. These should eventually lamb about six weeks ahead of the main flock.
Late August
A technician comes to carry out the ultrasound muscle and fat scanning for our flock performance recording project. The muscle scores seem to be a bit higher this year, which hopefully represents some progress, but we must wait for the full analysis report to arrive before we can assess each animal properly. The fieldsman from Welsh Country Foods comes to pick through the ram lambs and marks those ready to go for slaughter. They are collected the following day.
We dig the remaining potatoes from the garden. The yield is a little disappointing, but not too bad considering the blight.

Mid August
After nearly 20 years of trying, we finally manage to make a trip to the Centre for Alternative Technology, near Machynlleth. An interesting day out, with lots of interactive displays and ideas. We feel that some of the displays are a little bit dated, and lacking in detail, but the whole site is well laid out and pleasant.
We gather the ewes and lambs from the mountain to wean the lambs ready for muscle scanning next week. Some of the lambs have developed orf which will have set them back. The yearling ewes are sorted, vaccinated against Toxoplasmosis and treated against ticks.
